Prologue -- Plans and preparations -- First strikes -- Disaster for Nagumo -- The end of the Yorktown and Hiryu -- Yamamoto's reaction -- Retreat.
Summary: The decisive turning point in the whole Pacific War was the Battle of Midway, fought in early June 1942. Although it now seems inevitable that the Americans would turn back the Japanese tide of victory, it did not seem so at the time. The United States and its allies had suffered a series of setbacks which forced the American to defend Hawaii at Midway with only three aircraft carriers, one of which, Yorktown, had recently undergone extensive repairs after the battering she took at the Battle of the Coral Sea one month earlier.
