Proclaiming himself the long-expected Madhi, the Guided One of the Prophet, he preached that the Sudan was to be purged of its Egyptian oppressors. Drawn in by the Egyptian failure to deal with the situation, the British send General Gordon to organise an evacuation. On reaching Khartoum, General Gordon had hoped that the Mahdi could be reasoned with, but instead of negotiating, the Mahdi besieged the town for 317 days. This title focuses particularly on the battles fought by the British columns sent to relieve Khartoum.
<note type="statement of responsibility">Don Featherstone.</note><note>Includes bibliographical references (page 93).</note><subject><geographicCode authority="marcgac">f-sj---</geographicCode></subject><subject authority="nli"><name type="conference"><namePart>Gordon Relief Expedition (1884-1885)</namePart></name></subject>
